This easy-reader reference book could be read aloud to younger students and used by novice researchers to write reports about the Canadian Arctic. Though written simply, it doesn't stint on scientific and cultural facts. For example, indigenous people who are tired of defending subsistence whaling will be relieved to see this cultural practice written about matter-of-factly. The fact is stated that one whale could sustain fifteen Inuit families for a year, since the animal is used very carefully. The book is also full of engaging photographs young readers will adore, including polar bears, sled dogs and a fun northern custom called the blanket toss. Kids, should not, however, try this at home. Part of the "True Book" series. 2001, Children's Press/Grolier, $22.00 and $6.95. Ages 6 to 9. Reviewer: Donna FreedmanBook Details
