Carlee Hallman - Children's Literature
Forty folk tales from around the world are retold for children, including stories of folklore, humor, and inspiration. At two to three pages long, they are perfect to read before bedtime. Older children will enjoy rereading them for themselves. Each story is accompanied by a muted watercolor illustration that conveys and enhances and the mood. "Three Months' Night" is a contest between bear and chipmunk about the length of a day, which ends with an explanation of the stripes on the chipmunk. "The Very Strong Sparrow" is a tale of wit, with the sparrow protecting her young through pitting the elephant against a crocodile in a tug of war. The compelling story of "The Big Wave" is retold with fresh understanding. This is a book that parents and children will both enjoy. 2003 (orig. 1998), Lion Publishing/Lion Children's Books, Ages 3 to 8.

Children's Literature -
The first introduction that many of us get to the cultural heritage of others is through stories. This collection of forty stories, short enough to read aloud or even to commit to memory and share with an audience is a wonderful tool for any teacher, parent, or entertainer to have. With the exception of one story that was written by the author, each story in the collection has been adapted from the traditional literature of its original culture. The table of contents lists the origin of each of the stories so that teachers could use it to enhance the study of other cultures and parents could use it to help their children gain some insight into the lives of people in other countries. The illustrations are whimsical and colorful, capturing the humor and the dilemmas that the stories depict. Like Aesops Fables, many of the stories teach lessons that children will remember. Children will celebrate the cleverness of small animals or unimportant people who outsmart bigger and grander opponents, and they will appreciate the happy endings. Appended to the stories are suggestions from the author, a professional storyteller, on sharing stories with a crowd with specific suggestions about props and actions for each story. There is also a page of acknowledgements of the sources that the author used in his adaptations. Reviewer: Ellen WeltyChildren's Literature
