Synopsis

Surveys the location, weather, products, plants, and animals of rain forests.

Children's Literature

This entry in the "Checkerboard Rain Forest" series defines rainforests and indicates on a map where they're located. One page each is devoted to the rainforests of Amazonia, Africa and Southeast Asia, followed by a general discussion of the weather, products, foods, medicines and unusual animals found there. For those who already know something about the rainforest, the mention of animals or plants without pictures will serve as a refresher, but as a first course, the book is too general to stand as report material. As an appetizer, the presentation is average but this entry would better serve as an introduction to further research about a variety of topics, which children might generate after hearing this read aloud. 1999, ABDO Publishing, $19.92. Ages 8 to 11. Reviewer: Susan Hepler
