Overview
A collection of the finest nature essays on the seashores, beaches, and reefs of the world. The Lyons Press is proud to announce the second book in its series of nature anthologies in partnership with The Nature Conservancy-the renowned conservation organization over 900,000 members strong, that works to protect the biodiversity of our ocean. In this volume we celebrate the coastal regions of the world with twenty-two literary works that range over three continents, two oceans, and a hundred and fifty years: Charles Darwin on the island shores of the Indian Ocean; John Muir on Alaskaβs coast in the 1800s; Rachel Carson on the reef flats of Florida; Barry Lopez on beached whales on the Oregon coast; Rick Bass on the effects of tourism on an island paradise; and more.Editorials

Library Journal
One of a series of nature anthologies published in collaboration with the Nature Conservancy, this book is intended to introduce readers to the beauty and value of the coastal environment. Murray, the author of several nature books, has chosen a broad range of well-written selections, from Darwin to the present and the Gal pagos to New England, covering science and fishing, politics and poetry, Henry Beston, Mark Twain, and Rachel Carson. This is both great summer reading and an excellent introduction for students of coastal ecology. Unfortunately, except for an introduction and brief notes on contributors, there are no source citations and very little context for the selections, making it difficult for the newly intrigued reader to move deeper. Recommended for school or public libraries with little or no material on coastlines and few of the original works.--Margaret A.
