Reviewer:Brian D. Marshall, OD(TLC The Laser Center)
Description:This second edition book is part of a series geared towards providing a wide range of fundamental education in eye care. It instructs the eye care professional on how to properly use the slit lamp. The first edition was published in 1998.
Purpose:The slit lamp is an instrument used to examine the eye under high magnifications for various tests and health assessments. This book provides ophthalmic technicians the necessary knowledge for everyday use of the slit lamp and to prepare for board examinations. This primer fills an important need because there are few books currently available on this subject. The authors have done a commendable job of providing education on the many uses and techniques available with the slit lamp.
Audience:The book is written at an appropriate level for all ophthalmic technicians and students. The authors have a great deal of experience in the eye care field and between them, have authored many books.
Features:As with the first edition, this book discusses all the components necessary to use the slit lamp from the proper illumination and magnification settings to interpreting findings. Helpful study icons are placed in sections that are pertinent to the interests of specific eye care personnel. Each chapter begins with key points that summarize the information that will be presented. New to the second edition are chapters related to refractive surgery and examination of patients with ocular side effects from systemic medications. The photographs are still black and white, but are better quality and the book includes an atlas of the normal eye with photos of various commonly encountered pathologies. Color photos would be much appreciated, but those used are very helpful in showing the various settings.
Assessment:This second edition is a big improvement over the first in both content and presentation of the techniques. It is an excellent learning guide for ancillary personnel involved in providing cursory slit lamp examinations and for preparing for board examinations. It does not replace actual experience using the slit lamp but will facilitate the learning process for both beginning students and seasoned veterans.
