Leila Toledo - Children's Literature

The Impala, introduced in 1958 by Chevrolet, was fast, big, roomy and inexpensive. By its second year, the Impala had become the most popular Chevy ever made. Many Impalas could be seen with young people in them at drive-in restaurants and drive-in movies. Some clarification as to what drive-in movies are should be included for today's youth. By 1972, sales of Impalas reached ten million. They were popular family cars, especially in places like Cuba where they could haul large items. They were also popular there as taxis. Impalas in Cuba are often over forty years old. Chevrolet stopped making the Impala in 1966, but began making it again in 2000. It is small, has a more comfortable interior and has an efficient engine which does not use a lot of gasoline. The Impala is alive and well. This is part of the "Classic Car" series of Imagination Library. 2002, Garth Stevens Publishing, Ages 8 to 12.
