Synopsis
In a series of 18 essays Blewitt (lifelong learning, U. of Exeter), Cullingford (education, U. of Huddersfield) and contributors describe the relationship between sustainable development and higher education. They find that sustainable development is part of the world outside the academy, and the academy will have to develop relationships with social movements, build curricula, and take more steps to support equality and global responsibility to assume any sort of leadership role. Contributors examine theoretical and practical issues, social policy as it relates to higher education, and ways to include sustainability in various disciplines while anticipating sustainable development studies to become a discipline in its own right.
