Children's Literature

Keeping the oceans safe is a main priority for the U.S. Coast Guard. Now students can learn about the Coast Guard with this exciting new book. It features the responsibilities of this military branch including actions and jobs carried out by members, and information about their vehicles, weapons, equipment. Fantastic photos enrich spreads filled with simple, pertinent text which is delivered in a few short sentences. Red, white, or yellow stars enliven the page layout. In addition, "Blazer Fact," within an eye-catching text box offers extra information. This book is part of "The U.S. Armed Forces" series which presently includes eight titles. The reading level is pegged at second grade with an interest level ranging from third to ninth grade according to the publisher. While the illustrations would appeal to that interest group, the large-sized, simple text may appeal only to students through about grade six. The 32 text pages are followed by a glossary, added books, internet sites, and an index. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 7 to 12.
