Overview

Martin may have seen his sister, Cassie, to safety at the end of The Sky Inside, but his adventure is far from over. There’s still a totalitarian regime in place, murderous game shows on the air, and a couple of government agents on Martin’s tail. When Martin and his AllDog, Chip, go back to his old suburbs to check up on Mom, they get a lot more than they bargained for when they end up escaping with both parents. But the biggest surprise is yet to come—the heart of the government’s central power is closer to Martin than he ever suspected.

VOYA - Christina Fairman

Would he ever get to a place where the walls didn't listen and watch? Thirteen-year-old Martin Glass loves to play video games and hang out with his best friends. Oddly though, he appears to be the only person in town who shows any curiosity about the outside world. This sequel to The Sky Inside (Atheneum/S & S, 2008/VOYA August 2008) resumes the story of Martin's adventures beyond his artificial suburb, this time as he sets out with his parents to free his sister Cassie. Martin discovers that the nightmare is the creation of one man, a power-hungry politician who has used technology to cower citizens into submission. Martin guides his family through the wasteland beyond the dome while his robot dog, Chip, offers protection by shape-shifting into various people, objects, and robots to ensure safe passage. Even though the final triumph of good over evil is not surprising, events surrounding the revelation of Chip's secret identity will prove thought provoking for most readers. This book convincingly portrays a citizenry that has blindly accepted the monotony of a technological dictatorship. Although not quite as compelling as the first book, it still merits attention as a cautionary tale. Ideally one should read the first book prior to this title to gain a full appreciation for Martin's character. Otherwise some key events might not resonate. Reviewer: Christina Fairman

School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—In The Sky Inside (S & S, 2008), 13-year-old Martin Glass escapes the domed, tightly controlled suburb where he has been raised. With the assistance of Chip, who looks like a German shepherd but is actually a high-tech robot with the ability to control other cyber creatures, Martin learns several startling truths about the fate of his sister (a genetically enhanced Wonder Baby) and the frightening actions of the totalitarian government that rules his society. In this sequel, Martin, having discovered that the wilderness outside the domes is not the horrible wasteland the authorities tell everyone about but a beautiful place with wildlife and breathtaking sunsets, returns home to rescue his mother from her constrained life. But his father, whom Martin views as foolish and weak, insists on going with them, and soon the family finds themselves in danger of being captured. With his mysterious abilities, can Chip keep Martin safe and possibly be the key to bringing the government down? Readers unfamiliar with the first book will have difficulty following this one, and even then it's not easy to understand everything that's going on. Martin isn't a particularly sympathetic character, and Chip serves as the deus ex machina that rescues him from every conflict.—Walter Minkel, Austin Public Library, TX

Kirkus Reviews

Like its predecessor The Sky Inside (2008), this sequel posits that no corrupt government is so powerful that it can't be toppled by a boy and his robot dog. Frustrated with his uselessness among the genius children who make up the anti-government rebels, Martin and dog Chip return to domed Suburb HM1 to rescue Martin's parents. In the ruins of an old-style outdoor suburb, Martin and his comfort-accustomed parents live a parody of a Leave It to Beaver lifestyle, unable to cope without television and convenience food. Ultimately, going it alone won't be good enough, and Martin and his superpowered robot dog must confront the heart of the evil powers keeping his society subjugated. In a genre populated by gifted, destined and otherwise special child protagonists, Martin's pure normality is a breath of fresh air. After an overly expository start, this simple tale provides comforting, enjoyable adventure. (Science fiction. 10-12)
