This book is one of a series entitled "Places in American History;" this book reviews the history of the White House, from its initial design to its current status as an icon of American pride. Along the way the author introduces us to some of the inhabitants of the presidential residence and to the building's role in the work of our government. Many photographs are included, so the reader will understand why the Green Room, Red Room and Oval Office are so named.School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Two readable introductory accounts. Guzzetti presents an overview of the building's construction as well as a tour of its rooms today. Not as comprehensive as Leonard Everett Fisher's The White House (Holiday, 1989), which is for slightly older readers, this title is nonetheless serviceable. Kent gives a history of Salem from its founding to the present and pays a great deal of attention to the witch trials. Laurel Van Der Linde's The Devil in Salem Village (Millbrook, 1992) has more information on the trials. Both volumes contain good-quality full-color photos and reproductions and visitors' guides. They will be used for reports but browsers might enjoy the pictures.-Margaret B. Rafferty, Gwinnett-Forsyth Regional Library, GABook Details
