Gr 6 Up Pringle makes a potentially dull topicthe disposal of solid wastesfascinating in this inviting, well-researched book. He discusses clearly and sometimes humorously the history of waste disposal, the means that have been used to deal with it in the past, recent problems, and some of the proposed solutions. Anecdotes are intermingled with facts for a lively account and fast-paced reading. Plentiful sharp black-and-white photographs illustrate the text, highlighting the written material. Readers will be comfortable with the clear print and wide margins. The indexing is complete, referring both to the text and the illustrations, and with good cross-referencing. Showers' Where Does the Garbage Go? (Crowell, 1974) is not as current, and its picture book style is more suitable for younger readers. Young researchers won't waste their time reading this book.
