Gr 6-8-- An adequate, but rather dry biography that focuses largely on Marshall's civil rights activities and his extensive work in mounting legal challenges to segregation through the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Because most of those court battles are covered in great detail, this book is more a history of court cases and the modern civil rights movement than a biography. Marshall's early years are discussed in some detail, but his personal life as an adult is not given much attention, and his post-NAACP career receives only brief coverage. Many of the stories, quotes, and anecdotes have appeared in other juvenile biographies. The book may be useful for reports, but it doesn't show readers why this Supreme Court Justice had such respect for the Constitution, and why he was driven to extend its protections to everyone. James Haskins does a far better job of introducing the real man and his motivations in his very good Thurgood Marshall (Holt, 1992). Lisa Aldred's Thurgood Marshall (Chelsea, 1990) is also more thorough and attractive, although intended for a slightly older audience.
