Children's Literature

Tiger Woods emerges from the pages of this handsome biography as not only a phenomenal golfer, but also as an extremely hard-working young man who is devoted to his family, respectful of others, and concerned about helping children find positive paths in life. Goodman has done a great job of detailing the kind of quirky facts that children love to learn. Woods could hit a ball out of a sand trap at three; by four he could beat many adults on the back nine holes of the course where his father played; at six he won his first big tournament. But it's Woods's commitment to the game and to working as hard as he can to constantly improve that really impresses the reader. The book is nicely designed, with big, bold photographs and interesting variations in page layouts. And though one could wish for a few more photos of Woods as a young boy, the photographs capture a marvelous range of expression, showing the intensity that Woods brings to his endeavors. A final section of short quotations from Woods, his family and fellow golfers provides a satisfying conclusion. This book is part of the "Ovations" series. 2004, Creative Education, Ages 8 to 12.
