Overview

Tiger Woods' beaming smile is becoming a national symbol of achievement in America. Tiger is our hero, and he is our children's hero as well. Tiger's rise to glory is charted here as he advances from a toddler sitting in a high chair watching his father hit golf balls to his enormous smile as he received the famous green jacket at the Master's Tournament.
This book describes Tiger's best moments in a style suitable for young children aged five to eight. He is lauded as a renaissance man, balancing great golf with great grades. His parents support him through success and failure alike, and have nothing but pride in their outstanding son. When Tiger received his scholarship to Stanford, he told them that he wanted to play golf and study accounting. Fortunately for American golf, his game became more and more time consuming, and he decided to turn professional.
Tiger is a great example to children, especially because he is so young himself. His great attitude shines on each page, and leaves the reader with the desire to achieve. Tiger Woods, Golf Superstar is a great way to inspire children to achieve-in sports or in school.

Synopsis

Tiger Woods has taken the golf world by storm. In this appealing biography of determination and success, the young Tiger displays his boyish charm and amazing ability.

Sitting in his high chair and watching his father hit golf balls, Tiger became fascinated by the game. His fascination was accompanied by a unique talent that was recognized at an early age by his parents and golf experts alike. Tiger's mixed ethnic background ("Cablinasian" as he terms it) and winning smile created a stir even during his tournaments as a child.

Tiger has golfing skills combined with intelligence and a warm personality. Youngsters everywhere have come to respect and admire him for his astounding success in his sport and his grace both on and off the course.

Tiger Woods, Golf Superstar inspires children and adults alike to reach for their highest goals.

Children's Literature

This lively, colorfully illustrated easy reader introduces children to golf star Tiger Woods. Taking a chronological approach to his life and career, the book begins with Woods' first exposure to the sport at age one, when he was shorter than standard size clubs. While the author details Woods' many significant golfing achievements, including winning the 1997 Masters Tournament, he also admirably touches upon the discrimination Woods has faced. With an African American father and a mother born in Thailand, Woods has weathered his share of sneers and insults When he enrolled in a mostly white kindergarten in 1981, Woods was tormented by several classmates who threw rocks at him and tied him to a tree while calling him names. By recounting such revealing facets of Woods' life, the author shows young children a largely unknown side of this mega athletic star, making this book a recommended choice for library and school shelves. This title has much more to offer than the typical children's sports bio.

School Library Journal

K-Gr 3This book vividly portrays a young man who is remarkable not just for his athletic ability and his intelligence, but for his positive attitude and demeanor. Readers are introduced to Tiger Woods as a smiling baby who liked to sit in his high chair and watch his father hit golf balls in the garage. Soon after, he became the famous toddler swinging golf clubs in front of TV cameras. At five, he appeared on the TV show Thats Incredible. When asked for his autograph, he had to print because he was still too young to know script. Yet, not every moment of this stars life was sugarcoated. On his first day of kindergarten, Woods was tied to a tree and bullied by a group of sixth-grade boys. He faced prejudice from those who thought black people should be caddies, not pro golfers, but he stoically dismissed death threats and kept playing the game he loved. Noltes expressive full-color illustrations make this book especially appealing to younger children and the engaging details in the text will sustain interest for a read-aloud. Even libraries that already have material on Tiger Woods should find space for this one.Jackie Hechtkopf, University of Maryland, College Park Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
