Synopsis

A brief biography of Clarence Thomas and his rise to the position of Supreme Court justice.

Library Journal

K-Gr 3-This picture-book biography covers Thomas's life from his childhood in poverty to his choice of career, political views, and controversial Supreme Court nomination. Since this book is written for young readers, Collins obviously does not go into depth on any particular subject or event. Most pages consist of an average of five short sentences; on a few occasions, transitions are a little choppy. Shepherd's watercolor illustrations are equally simple and somewhat folksy. The author's sources are not cited. While of limited use for reports, this book introduces children to an important American figure. More importantly, Thomas's story, as told by Collins, serves as a shining example of what can be accomplished in spite of all odds.-Mary N. Oluonye, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
