"Tim Duncan wins a gold medal in swimming!" That is not a phrase you would expect to hear relating to this well known basketball player. But it was once possible, if it hadn't been for a little hurricane named Hugo. Growing up in St. Croix, Tim and his sister trained daily for swimming competition. At thirteen years old, Tim was even nationally ranked in the 400-meter freestyle. Hurricane Hugo changed all of that with the destruction of the island's pool. Training in the ocean with the sharks was not an option. Thus began the legend of Tim Duncan.
