Gr 4-6 According to Hess, ferretsa do mesticated member of the weasel family recently have become popular as pets. Her congenial photo essay follows the care of three young animals abandoned on the farm of an Animal Rescue Shelter worker. The narrative accompanying the attractive photographs describes their physical characteristics and temperament, proper housing and sleeping arrange ments, feeding, handling, grooming, and health matters. The experiences of one of the three ferrets after being ``adopted'' by a little boy are shown; finally the pregnant female in the original trio has her litter, and their early care and growth is cov ered. Wild ferrets have become nearly ex tinct, and Hess tells of efforts to save the few remaining animals and repopulate them in their natural habitat. This infor mative introduction to these small, ap pealing animals provides enjoyable read ing as well as practical advice for potential pet owners. Margaret Bush, Simmons College, BostonBook Details
