Overview

Sub-continental India juts out from continental Asia and is two-thirds surrounded by water—the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal. This vast and heavily populated land is divided into 28 states and seven union territories: they comprise the biggest democracy in the world.

As Timeless India shows, the country is geographically diverse—from the high, remote Himalayan mountain range of the north, to the dry plains of central and eastern India, the great Thar Desert in the west, and the palm-fringed beaches of the south. Equally Indians themselves show great contrasts, the vast riches of the old rulers—the sultans and maharajahs—which lingers on through their magnificently extravagant architecture, and the abject poor who have nothing.

Conquered and ruled at various times in its history—most recently by the British Empire, from whom freedom was gained after the end of World War II—modern India shows its rich history best through its astonishingly beautiful architecture that has been constructed and designed to make the most of India's climate, whether in the freezing north or the blazing south. No expense was spared and this has resulted in some of the most atmospheric and romantic buildings to be found anywhere in the world, including the greatest of them all, the magnificent Taj Mahal.

Timeless India encapsulates all this and shows through beautiful photographs many of the astonishing riches of India while also outlining India's long and majestic history.
