Overview

A blind Greek peddler tells the story of the wedding between a fellow peddler and his bride in a remarkable series of vivid and telling vignettes. As the book cinematically moves from one character's perspective to another, events and characters move toward the convergence of the wedding--and a haunting dance of love and death.

Library Journal

Jean travels from the south of France; Zdena travels from Prague. They meet in Italy, at the mouth of the Po, to attend the wedding of their daughter Ninon. Through their travels, Ninon's story unfolds. In a casual sexual encounter on a French beach, Ninon contracted HIV. This discovery becomes all the more real to her when she visits the prison where the nameless transmitter of the disease is dying. Ninon's true love, Gino, begs her to marry him, but she repeatedly refuses. Then one day she accepts both Gino and her limited future prospects. The poignant wedding takes place mixed with flashes of the brief and painful future that lies ahead for the happy couple. A bittersweet novel by the author of Corker's Freedom LJ 10/1/93; royalties will go to assist the seropositive and those with AIDS.-Joanna M. Burkhardt, Univ. of Rhode Island Coll. of Continuing Education Lib., Providence
