Overview

A strategically located land that links southwestern Asia with south-eastern Europe and commands the waters connecting the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, Turkey has for millennia been a prize for conquerors and a seat of empires. The Hittites, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, and the Ottoman Turks all left their mark on this fascinating land.

The modern Republic of Turkey, which emerged from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, is unusual among the nations of the Middle East. A democracy in a region with autocrats, a Muslim country that enforces strict separation between religion and public life and that has always maintained cordial relations with Israel, Turkey is also a member of NATO and an important ally of the United States. Yet the nation is not without problems, including recurrent ethnic conflict and a military with a history of intervening in government affairs.

Discusses the geography, history, economy, government, religion, people, foreign relations, and communities of Turkey.

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer

Turkey is unique among its Muslim neighbors for a variety of reasons. Straddling two worlds—Europe to its north and east and the Middle East to its east and south—Turkey has maintained close ties to the United States while remaining a predominately Islamic nation. A democracy and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) ally, Turkey is alone in the region for its support of Israel. While embracing its Muslim traditions, its government has since Attaturk's rise to power in 1923 made a conscious decision to separate religion from the working of its government. Part of the 29-title "Major Muslim Nations" series, this book is a good introduction to the history, economics, politics, people and foreign relations of this nation. Updated and revised and with the editorial consultation of the Foreign Policy Research Institute—a conservative think tank—this text easily covers the basics of this ancient nation, from the great battles during the Holy Roman Empire to its continued struggles within its borders with the Kurds and Armenians. With a history as long as Turkey's, it would be difficult to cover any one subject in depth. This text does a good job of hitting the high points of this country's development and current situation. Further, given the book's chronology, glossary, bibliography, index, and list of internet sites, this would serve as an excellent resource for a study of the region or country. Students, however, may find the reading a bit dry, and struggling older readers may have difficulty with some of the text. The series introduction by Harvey Sicherman, the now-deceased former president and director of the Foreign Policy Research Institute, reads like a college-level overview of the world's major Muslim nations. That aside, the book adequately delivers a solid background and primer on the issues affecting this strategic Islamic nation today. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
