Gr 5-7 Chaplik introduces Jesse Jackson's early years through a description of people, times, and places that were critical to his development. Included are his association with Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his involvement in international events, such as struggles against apartheid in South Africa and the release of Lieutenant Robert Goodman, Jr., from Syrian capture. Explanations of his Operation PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition are provided in addition to some details of his bid for the Presidency. Many of the black-and-white photographs are identical to those found in Paul Westman's Jessie Jackson: I Am Somebody (Dillon, 1980) and Warren J. Halliburton's The Picture Life of Jesse Jackson (Watts, 1984). However, this book has a longer text and is for a slightly older audience. Facts are presented in a smooth, straightforward style in an appealing format. One sexist feature is an appendix of other black leaders that provides capsule biographies of men only. Helen E.
