Gr 6 Up This sympathetic but not uncritical biography reveals the strivings and determinations of a man driven to serve and bring about change. From Jackson's humble beginnings in the south through his days as a mover and shaker in Chicago, Kosof uses written accounts and interviews to discuss the real Jesse Jacksonboth pro and con. Jackson emerges from this account as an unrelenting worker for his vision of America who sees himself as the hero of the downtrodden and the builder of coalitions for the future. Black-and-white photographs of average quality illustrate the text. This book presents Jackson's personal history and his public record in clear readable prose. It is a good beginning spot from which to construct a fair picture of Jackson and his political ideas. Steve Matthews, Foxcroft School, Middleburg, Va.
