Reviewer:Dennis W. Boulware, MD, FACP(University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine)
Description:This book offers a series of test questions to help prepare the learner for the USMLE Step 2 examination. Each test block has a specific time limit for the learner to assess their timeliness in taking the mock examination. The answers and category of the test questions are provided to help in learning from one's errors, and to assess areas of weakness.
Purpose:The purpose is to prepare readers for success in the USMLE Step 2 licensing examination. It isn't clear how well the book prepares the reader for factual acquisition as much as helping the reader in assessing their test-taking strategies.
Audience:The intended reader is anyone who has to complete the USMLE Step 2 examination. Usually thisw ill be a medical student, but it also may be an international medical graduate seeking licensing in the USA. The author claims to have scored in the 99th percentile of the examination establishing him as a credible source.
Features:The book consists of 15 timed test blocks, with the answers and rationale provided at the end of the book. There are just a few photographs, which is a drawback since the USMLE uses liberal visual aids for testing purposes.
Assessment:Overall, this is a useful guide to practice for the real thing. It should provide readers with actual timed experience in test taking as they prepare for the real USMLE Step 2 examination. There are several other similar books available, and a few that are constructed as study guides. This book is not a study guide and may better serve as a companion for a study guide type of book.
