VOYA - Cindy Lombardo

Generously illustrated with black-and-white as well as color photos, this compact timeline divides the events of the twentieth century into four periods: the end of an era (1900-1917), between the wars (1918-1941), and the world divided (1942-1989). A double-page spread offers a broad overview of the period and is followed by several pages that present a yearly breakdown of selected people and events listed under one of the four categories-world events, everyday life, science and discovery, and arts and entertainment. Entries are brief, as one would expect with this type of tool. As with all timelines, the selection of information included is idiosyncratic, but that's part of the appeal for readers who enjoy browsing through history! Useful for most school and public library collections. Index. Illus. Photos. Charts. Chronology. VOYA Codes: 3Q 1P M J (Readable without serious defects, No YA will read unless forced to for assignments, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8 and Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9).

Children's Literature - Melinda Medley Sprinkle

There's no limits to the fascination proved in this fact-filled time line of the 20th century. From Teddy bears, juke boxes, rock music, clothing trends and fads to historical events like the Hindenburg, Gulf War, space exploration and the latest craze in technology-this time line will allow children and families to see, discover, and learn it all. It's hard to believe that during early 1900's we had no radio, television, and air travel. Now, at the turn of a new century, we can launch space craft, communicate with other nations at the touch of a button, and use computers, fax machines, the internet, and even entertain ourselves with virtual reality games. Filled with historical and visual pictures, this book is a powerful reference that cites significant developments and events.

School Library Journal

Gr 5 Up-Notable events and phenomena of this century are highlighted in this oversized volume. The time-line format extends from page to page and includes coverage in the areas of arts and entertainment, science and discovery, everyday life, and world history. Glossy full-color and black-and-white archival photographs and prints are attractively laid out amid short topical paragraphs. This attempt to catalog the important aspects of this century in a mere 48 pages results in a highly subjective treatment, and the author's British background is evident. The changing role of women during the 1920s and the U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s are explained but individuals or contributions from Mexican-American, Native American, or modern feminist groups are not represented. This is an entertaining and visually appealing book but a multimedia encyclopedia or CD-ROM will have more instructive value.-Janet Woodward, Franklin High School, Seattle, WA
