Children's Literature

With her concern for species extinction evident, Radley constructs a well-organized text that presents ten endangered species that live in or along waterways. An introduction helps us understand the interdependence of organisms and habitats that constitute ecosystems. Unfortunately, it must be pointed out that some human activities compromise these systems. Each of the ten waterway species, which range from the diminutive Devil's Hole pupfish to the enormous humpback whale, is presented in a wonderful format. Initially, the reader is given key scientific factsβ€”name, endangered status, range, size, diet and life span. Next is an essay giving description to the facts and reasons for the species' endangered status. To balance the scientific information, each species is celebrated in an affectionate poem (yes, African slender-snouted crocodiles are included) and a true-to-life illustration. A world map of the animal ranges, glossary and a list of organizations that help endangered wildlife are included. Best of all is a section called "What you can do" that lists things young people can do to help. These ideas could be shared with a classroom, scout troop or family, for they include substantive efforts we could all take to heart. Radley's book is part of the "Vanishing from" series. 2001, Carolrhoda, $21.27 and $6.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Barbara Kennedy

School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-Radley offers interesting juxtapositions of factual information about endangered species with short poems about them. Each book provides basic facts about 10 animals from various parts of the world and outlines the threats to their survival. Conservation efforts and results are noted, but the impact of human destruction of habitat continues to compromise long-term survival prospects for most of the creatures. The poems are well positioned on the full-page, full-color paintings of the animals. Together they evoke an emotional response that facts alone often fail to provide. The same introduction in each volume presents an overview of the severity and complexity of the problem and encourages action. Suggestions at the end of each book offer concrete ideas. A map of animal ranges rounds out the volumes.-Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
