Overview

If you think it's hard for grown-ups to know what to do when everyday conflicts arise, you can imagine what it's like for children, who are just learning how to communicate constructively with others. That's why this book is so important. Through photographs and simple questions, childhood development expert Barbara K. Polland portrays 14 common conflicts (jealousy, hitting, and teasing among them) at home, at school, in the park—plus 14 possible resolutions and 14 ways to celebrate success. Full-color photos of children engaged in real-life conflicts and resolutions.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

Text and photographs designed to create opportunities for children to talk about their experiences of conflict and the varieties of ways to resolve them.

Children's Literature - Children's Literature

At last a comprehensive guide book for parents, teachers and caregivers that gives guidance on how to handle conflict situations involving young children. Many times adults feel that punishment is the answer when a child is involved in a conflict situation but the approach applied by the author is to use conflict and problems that arise as teachable moments. With each of the fourteen situations included children have an opportunity to read, talk about and help each other learn how to solve problems without violence. Three steps are offered as framework to resolving conflict. The first step is to determine exactly what happened and how those involved feel about what happen. Step two is to determine the many different ways that the problem can be solved. And the third step is to review the process taken to resolve the conflict. I highly recommend this book. 2000, Tricycle Press, Ages 3 to 8, $9.95. Reviewer: Leila Toledo—Children's Literature
