Synopsis

Simple text and photographs present nurses and their role in the community.

Children's Literature

This very simple format book (65 words) introduces beginning readers to people in the community and explains their roles. A full color photograph accompanies the straightforward statement on the right-hand page. In this book kids learn where nurses work and a little about the type of work they do. The photographs of hospitals, doctors' offices, and patients contain as much, if not more, information than the text. There is a table of contents, advice to parents and teachers, glossary (definitions are written at a higher level than the text), bibliography that includes at least three references and a similar number of Internet sites, and index/word list. This title in the "Helpers in Our Community" series has the look and feel of a regular reference book and is designed for emergent readers. 2000, Pebble Books, Ages 4 to 6, $13.25. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
