School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-These colorful overviews place more emphasis on introductory background of the Web and animation than on traditional career information. Webmaster describes a Web page, types of networks, servers, browsers, and protocols. It does not show a readable page of HTML for kids to see exactly what they have to write. Computer Animator gives the history of animation and explains how it is used today, the specialized roles of animators, educational requirements for entering the field, and the future of the industry. Designer covers background on Web pages, what a designer does, training required, and job outlook. Its strength is that it features several young people who started working in the field as early as age 12 and 15. Large font, colorful photographs, attractive page layout, and the nature of the topics make these titles appealing to students who might not otherwise pick up a vocational book. While much of the traditional career information is provided, the organization does not allow students to extract it without reading the entire book. Although costly for each career to be bound separately, these titles supplement older books as they introduce career choices that were not available 10 years ago.-Sandra L.
