Library Journal

A biography of this recently deceased NFL patriarch is overdue. Wellington Mara was a boy when his bookmaker father bought an NFL franchise for New York. Thus began Mara's 80-year relationship with the Giants. DeVito's (The Ultimate Dictionary of Sports Quotations) work is also a biography of Mara's father and brother and an inside history of the Giants. There are some rough spots in the writing, but this essential figure in pro football history is portrayed honestly, thoroughly, and enjoyably. Also for academic libraries..
