School Library Journal

Gr 4-7-These basic introductions are colorfully illustrated and include calendars, maps, and annotated lists of books and Web sites for further exploration. Each title covers the religion's beginnings, basic beliefs and practices, and holidays. Jew also has a chapter on food, and Jew and Buddhist both include a section on "My Religion Today and Tomorrow." Portions of the books are awkwardly written, and all three omit important terminology and major festivals (Hindu doesn't mention dancing or music as a part of worship; Jew ignores birth rituals and only covers four holidays). There are no glossaries and many terms do not appear in the indexes. Sue Penney's Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism (all Heinemann Library, 2000) are more thorough and complete (though not flawless) treatments for this audience.-Ann W. Moore, Schenectady County Public Library, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
