The picture of a dour Amish family on the cover sets the tone of this book in the "What Makes Me A?" religious series. The history of the Amish as they separated from the other denominations and split within their own group over Biblical interpretation, dress, behavior, and practice is briefly told. As Anabaptists they accept adult baptism only, but share other Christian beliefs and holidays with other denominations. Each church governs itself through male church elders. They practice shunning and excommunication for those they judge to be sinners. They believe in nonviolence and do not serve in the military. Plain clothing is worn without buttons. Electricity, TVs, computers, radios, and cars are forbidden. Settlements of Amish are found in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Children are educated only to the eighth grade, and the Amish population continues to thrive and grow. Besides farming, they make furniture, and market farm produce and other crafts. Colored photos and maps aid the reader. A glossary, index, bibliography, and web sites are listed for further information. This book gives a grim portrait of this denomination. 2006, Kidhaven Press/Thomson Gale/Thomson Corporation, Ages 8 to 12.
