Synopsis

Spaceman or soccer pro, candy-store owner or the queen herself — the sky's the limit when Colin McNaughton's imaginative cast of kids act out what they'd like to be when they grow up.

Sit back and enjoy the show as the inimitable Colin McNaughton stages a lively class musical all about growing up. What would you like to be when you get older? A king of the jungle or the king of rock 'n' roll? A famous poet or a pirate just like Dad ("That's my girl!")? There's no end to the possibilities — but, as this amusing presentation points out, there's also no rush to become a grownup when being a child can be so much fun!

Janice DeLong - Children's Literature

Colin's kindergarten class is proud to present a performance for their parents expressing through song, costume, and props their aspirations for vocations when they become adults. Each child bounds exuberantly onto the stage ready to take on the world dressed as his or her future self. One child chooses to be an explorer; another, a poet. A rock 'n' rollin' Elvis impersonator is joined by a pirate. Soccer players are trailed by a mermaid. Colin (actually, the adult author) has aspirations to be King of the jungle. The show is going well until a tiny future scuba diver suddenly realizes the weight of being an adult. All ends well, however, with an affectionate teacher reassuring the little realist that he still has a number of years to enjoy being a child. This warmly profound, yet amusing, addition to the bookshelf promises to be a favorite of young readers. 2005, Candlewick Press, Ages 4 to 6.
