Synopsis
On a windy day in Kitty Hawk, N.C. in 1903, the Wright Brothers attempt to make history as they prepare the "Flyer" for the world's first engine-powered flight.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- Schulz bases this account of the Wright brothers first engine-powered, manned, controlled aircraft flight in 1903 on historical fact, but he has embellished the story with the addition of a young local boy and fictionalized dialogue and detail. He uses short simple sentences, an unsophisticated vocabulary, and an open, large-print format. He includes some background on the brothers' earlier experiments and a brief description of Flyer's design and construction, but emphasis is on the drama and excitement of the flight itself. Watercolor illustrations are true to the time and place, but drawings of the plane tend to be confusing. --Tatiana Castleton, Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, CA
