Overview

Quigley Johnson has, reluctantly, given up the rest of her last year of high school to take part in her best friend Ann's Betterment Plan, which will turn them into the best-dressed, most sought-after, most admired girls at their senior formal. Because - hey - who doesn't want the perfect prom, complete with a dream dress and a devastatingly handsome date?

But the prom costs money - lots of money - and even though the girls could easily have Ann's mom design their dresses (she's only Victoria Parisi, one of the most famous designers in the world), Ann insists that they pay their own way.  And that's how Quigley gets stuck making artistic topping masterpieces on frozen pizzas canvases, before becoming a live model for Ms. Parisi's fashion design class, where she meets Zander.

He's cute, and cool, and funny, with a killer design sensibility (even if he can't sketch).  But is he too good to be true? And what about David, the hot, talented artist at school, who's also kind of a jerk, but won't leave Quigley alone? And Ann - she started the Betterment Plan to improve Quigley and herself, but it seems like it's ripping their friendship to shreds.

This road to the prom dream may just end in disaster.

About the Author, Aimee Ferris

Aimee Ferris left the corporate world after her company made an ill-fated decision to send her to Hawaii on a ten week business trip.  After living in Fiji, she joined a regatta as crew and sailed the South Pacific landing as a PADI divemaster on the Great Barrier Reef, before relocating to the Caribbean to try her hand at training dolphins.  Skydiving, playing a dead body in a dinner theatre, white water rafting, and feeding sharks underwater also made the list of prospective occupations before she settled on a career of making stuff up. She now juggles freelancing for a few dozen national magazines (*where she does not make stuff up), photographing her travel work and writing books, including Girl Overboard in Penguin's (S.A.S.S. series). She lives in New York.

Gr 7 Upβ€”Trying to earn enough money for an expensive prom dress, Quigley Johnson has worked at a series of strange jobs, such as placing toppings on frozen pizzas in a factory assembly line and playing a murder victim who falls facedown into a plateful of salad at a dinner theater production. None of them has turned out well, and she's not doing any better at college admissions or finding a date for the prom. The art institute she dreams of attending has turned her down, and the only guy who shows an interest in her is David, an arrogant know-it-all who refers to himself as the Art King and treats her as a competitor. However, when her friend Anne lines up a gig for them as models for a fashion-design course, things look as though they are taking a turn for the better. Quigley is paired up with cute, smart Zander, who creates beautiful designs for her, appreciates her artistic talent, and seems to be interested in her romantically as well as professionally. Complications ensue when David asks her out and does not take rejection well. By the conclusion of the novel, Quigley has learned some lessons about friendship and about making big decisions wisely, and all ends happily. While it touches on some serious issues, this is a fun, lighthearted read. Quigley's various employment experiences are laugh-out-loud funny, and Ferris achieves just the right snarky tone with the protagonist's descriptions of her misadventures.β€”Kathleen E.
