Children's Literature

Following the pattern of other books in the "MyReportLinks.com Presidential" series, this historical biography highlights the accomplishments, challenges and legacy of the twenty-seventh president of the United States. Raised in Cincinnati, Taft dreamed someday of becoming a Supreme Court Justice. However, a long road that took Taft to Yale, Washington, the Philippines, and the White House would delay this dream. Eager first to please his somewhat domineering father and then later his ambitious wife, Nellie, Taft held many position in public service for which he was known for his honesty and integrity. Groomed by his then-close friend Teddy Roosevelt, Taft became President in 1909. His one-term tenure as President was marked both by achievements, such as strengthening child labor laws, and disappointments, such as how his tariff acts were received. However, Taft was able to accomplish his dream of finally becoming a Supreme Court Justice in 1921, the only person to hold the highest positions in both the executive and judicial branches of government. This book provides many online and print resources with which readers can continue their research on Taft. As an introduction to Taft's life, however, this book is outstanding. 2003, Enslow Publishers, Ages 9 to 13.
