How very exciting! Here is a book that is part of the series "How Economics Works" and actually explains budgeting in a very reader-friendly way. There are six chapters covered in only 36 pages and all the chapters are filled with photographs, drawings, and easy-to-follow text. The author starts out by explaining exactly what a budget is and then takes the reader through money that comes in, savings, ideas for donations, having fun spending, and how to actually stick to a budget (I need to reread this chapter for myself). Trivia facts can also be found throughout the book. Did you know that the word "windfall" was used in the 1400s and it referred to, "good things that literally fell down with the wind—such as fresh fruit blown down from a tree"? The reader will also learn that the world's first piggy banks were made in Europe in the 1300s and were made in the shape of a pig because they were thought of as a kind of "bank" for food. Once children start receiving an allowance for their completed chores or receiving money for birthdays and holidays, this book should become a part of their lives. Not only does the information provide an excellent lesson in responsibility, but it also provides a way of handling money that can follow them into adulthood. At the end of the book, the reader will find a glossary, bibliography, websites, a list of places to visit, and activities. I highly recommend this book and hope it finds its way into the hands of all children who enjoy receiving and spending money. 2006, Lerner Publications, Ages 8 to 12.
