Synopsis

Every day, people spend money to get the goods and services they need or want. The cash they use may travel around the world or go right to the neighborhood bank. Checks, credit, and debit cards are another way to transact purchases. This book introduces readers to the various ways we spend. Students will also learn a crucial real-world skill—making a budget, so they’ll have money available when they need it.

Children's Literature

Most people who have any money at all do not have any trouble spending it. However, to spend money wisely is a lesson that must be learned. This early chapter book teaches the young reader how to spend wisely, using multicultural images, simple diagrams, and a math connection, which is a way for the reader to apply the knowledge he will gain reading this material. The reader will learn about making a budget by planning how much to spend on food and rides at the fair. In the budget section, a young child is shown writing down a spending plan in a notebook. This seems unrealistic for this age group. This "Weekly Reader" series is acceptable for the recommended age group but should not be considered primary source material for an elementary collection. Although it includes a glossary of the terms included in bold print in the text, as well as an index and further reading suggestions, it is weak in format. It will not hold the attention of the very young reader, and does not present adequate information for the lower elementary curriculum. A better choice would be the "My Money" series (Compass Point). 2006, Weekly Reader Early Learning Library, Ages 4 to 6.
