Overview

Survive an icy night under a December moon with a song sparrow stalked by a midnight predator in Ohio's suburban meadowland. Navigate through underground passageways with a mole in the chilly darkness of December and January beneath the Great Plains of Kansas. Experience January moonlit courtship with a hooting horned owl in the forests of the Catskill Mountains. Prepare for hibernation with a female bear as February's ice crystals replace the dew in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

A song sparrow, a mole, a bear, and an owl must struggle through the cold, harsh months of winter.

Children's Literature

Each year, George tells us, there are either thirteen full or thirteen new moons. Bringing together stories that were originally published separately in the late 1960s, this book shares four of the winter moons¾the moon of the winter bird (December); the moon of the moles (December-January); the moon of the owls (January); and the moon of the bears (February). Each non-anthropomorphized story brings vividly to life a crucial moment in the life of its featured animal—that is, the moment when the mole realizes that her underground home is threatened by human highway construction, or the moment when the owl utters his first courtship cry, heralding the eventual coming of spring. The writing throughout, rich with naturalistic detail, is extremely poetic and beautiful¾"The winter bird was becoming a spring bird. A song was forming in his throat. He could not sing it out, but as December's moon went down behind the clouds, he cocked his head and listened toward the south." Reproductions of eight full-color paintings by various artists are included. Part of the "Seasons of the Moon" series. 2001, HarperTrophy, $5.95. Ages 8 to 12.
