Overview

This three-volume set geared toward high school students features 107 biocritical essays on a diverse range of poets writing primarily in Englishfrom Homer to Basho, from Rilke to Gwendolyn Brooks. In addition, 15 essays in volume three cover historical periods, ethnic groups, poetic types, basic poetic forms, and poetry-writing. Accompanying each biocritical essay is a drawing or photo of the poet, a sample poem (excerpts not uncommon), a selected bibliography of works by and about the poet, and often a website or mailing address for additional information. To appeal to the eyes of high-school students, the type is large, and a great deal of space is allotted to marginssome used for definitions, notes, or quoted matter from the essays. (Without the sidebars and with smaller print, could have been a third fewer pages and bound in two volumesalbeit less readablerather than three.) Appendices include lists of holders of distinguished posts (Poet Laureates of England and Consultants to the Library of Congress) and winners of distinguished honors (National Book Award and Pulitzer Prizes). Contributors are poets, English instructors, or both. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Library Journal

Designed to engage the eyes and minds of high school students, World Poets offers 107 biocritical essays covering poets widely read in the English language, including English speakers and poets translated into English. In addition, 15 thematic essays analyze historic periods, ethnic writers, and poetic genres and forms. Each biography includes a picture enhanced by marginal notes in a two-color format. Definitions in black print and notes in blue appear on a light blue border on each page. Thought-provoking quotations from the text are occasionally set out in large print in the margins, and selected bibliographies of works by and about the poets, including some Internet sites, end each piece. The thorough, somewhat subdued essays will challenge all but the most advanced high school students. Padgett, an influential poet and educator, has assembled a stellar group of poets and scholars whose entries blend biography with general observations about the poets' styles and specific remarks on a poem or excerpt boxed for emphasis. The selection of 20th-century poets overemphasizes Absurdism and the New York School, and all living poets covered were born before 1960. Nevertheless, this provides an excellent introduction to poetry scholarship. Highly recommended for academic libraries and high school libraries with strong language arts programs--Vivian Reed, Long P.L., CA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\
