Children's Literature

A physically-distinctive book with a long, thin format, this early childhood book about food features a pull-out on the edge of each page that includes a second sheet slanting upward and to the right. For instance, the spread about the color green shows a miniature girl standing amid a selection of produce, including asparagus, broccoli, peas, green beans, artichoke, cucumber slices, a pear, and kiwi. When the tab is pulled, out comes a sheet showing a selection of five of the illustrated foods with their names above them; the additional slanted sheet shows a stem of broccoli. The remaining pages, left and right, are very much the same, except that they focus on yellow, orange, red, purple, and blue. Black, white, pink, and brown are all compactly addressed on one sheet, while the last "rainbow of colors" page reprises some of the foods from earlier pages and adds a few new ones for readers to identify.
