Overview
This is a coursebook written for courses on children's language disorders, their assesement and treatment. It is written for introductory courses on language disorders in children. It is based on several books including textbooks and journal articles on language disorders in children. The emphasis in on descriptive and clinical perspective. The coursebook makes it easier for instructors to expand the basic information provided here by including complex issues and theoretical perspectives.The book contains no figures.

It provides material concerning terminology and symptomatology relevant to the following areas: specific language impairment; language disorders of mental retardation, autism, hearing impairment, and brain injury: cultural diversity with respect to language impairment; and the assessment and treatment of childhood language impairments. The author acknowledges that much of the information is based on several current textbooks.
Purpose: The purpose of this coursebook is to provide introductory information to students in order to enable them to process classroom material effectively and to be relatively unhindered with detailed note taking. The author emphasizes that a coursebook is designed to represent a teaching tool and a companion to standard modes of instruction such as textbooks and lectures. The purpose is also to assist Instructors by presenting basic information and saving time and effort in course preparation.
Audience: The intended audience is students who are enrolled in an introductory course in childhood language disorders. The material is adequately geared to their level. Although the author is not an expert, he has summarized the basic information in this field of study.
Features: The information is presented in short paragraphs with terms in boldface print and concise descriptions of terms, characteristics, and procedures. The writing is clear and well organized. Space is provided for class notes obtained in lectures or discussions. Additional space is offered for special assignments presented by the instructor. Study questions are located at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: The usefulness of this coursebook will depend on the pedagogical style of individual instructors. Some professors will find that the material in the coursebook format provides basic information for students and enables them to process classroom material effectively without a burden of excessive note taking. Others will find that current textbooks will serve a similar purpose and that this coursebook is redundant. Students will not benefit from this book without lectures and additional readings.
