A Coursebook on Scientific and Professional Writing for Speech-Language Pathology is divided into three parts covering basic writing skills that are the foundation of good writing, scientific writing in accordance with the fifth edition of APA, and writing assessment reports, treatment plan, progress reports, and professional correspondence.

From The Critics

Reviewer: Henriette leGrand, MA, CCC/SLP(University of Florida)
Description: This combination workbook and textbook uniquely provides examples and practice exercises to develop technical and professional writing skills for the speech-language pathologist.
Purpose: Examples of both correct and incorrect responses are provided with opportunities for revisions. Overall appearance and features of this book make it easy to use.
Audience: Although the diagnostic reports and treatment plans are specific to speech-language pathology services, the general writing skills, rules of composition, and format for scientific writing and research papers are helpful tools across disciplines.
Features: The book's organization lends itself to assignments of one or more sections based on the needs of the students. Sample treatment plans are diverse and very good. There are only a few shortcomings found in the treatment plans. For reimbursement purposes, the baseline status should be stated with objective treatment goals and criteria. It would also be helpful to demonstrate progress over time with dates and tables in at least one report. Projected treatment time should also be stated. These recommendations are based on real world compliance for third-party payment (e.g., Medicaid, insurance companies) requests.
Assessment: It is not sufficient to be a good clinician. Diagnostic and treatment procedures must include professional, accurately written reports to document progress and to receive payment for speech-language services. This book is a very useful tool for clinic supervisors, course instructors, and graduate students.
