Overview

The Our World series supports national social studies standards related to culture. This book describes and illustrates the land, animals and people of Russia. The photographs support early readers in understanding the text. The repetition of words and phrases helps early readers learn new words. This book also introduces early readers to subject-specific vocabulary words, which are defined in the Words to Know section. Early readers may need assistance to read some words and to use the Table of Contents, Words to Know, Read More, Internet Sites, and Index/Word List sections of the book.

Children's Literature

Young readers will learn basic information about another country. One of the "Our World" series from Pebble Books that include China, Kenya and Mexico, this title features full-color photos and a simple text covering the social life and customs of Russia, its land, animals, and people. A table of contents, glossary, bibliography, index/word list, the country's map, and currency information make this an unusually informative first reader. 2002, Pebble Books/Capstone Press,

School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Basic facts about the geography of Russia are presented in large print. Only 161 words are used, yet this is a good introduction to the land, animals, and people for this age level. Full-page color photos face each page of print. However, the only picture of children, in addition to the boy on the cover, is of two girls eating. Parents and teachers are warned in a note facing the table of contents that early readers may need assistance with the suggestions for further information. This is certainly true for the Internet sites; they could be used for some additional visuals but not for subject matter. A good addition to school and public libraries.-Elizabeth Talbot, University of Illinois, Champaign Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
