Overview

An unfortunate accident with an Apple drives Bunny from Bunnyland to Elsewhere. Every letter in the alphabet is represented in Bunny's journey, through what he eats (Greens), to whom he meets (Insects, Jay, Kitten, Lizard), and then a little sleep (Nap), to Tripping back to town, right side Up and Up-side- down. The creation of The ABC Bunny was a Gág family affair, with sister Flavia composing the "ABC Song," included in this faithful edition; brother Howard penning the lettering; and Wanda writing and illustrating the story. Best known for her Newbery Honor winner Millions of Cats, Wanda Gág (1893-1946) was a pioneer in children's book writing, integrating text and illustration. Born in New Ulm, Minnesota, she rose to international acclaim. In recognition of her artistry, she was posthumously awarded the 1958 Lewis Carroll Shelf Award for Millions of Cats and the 1977 Kerlan Award for her body of work.

Follows a little bunny as it scampers through the alphabet.

Children's Literature

A bunny appears on each page of this reissued alphabet book. The bunny provides continuity with each letter of the alphabet featured in a loosely-constructed story. The bunny is startled by the apple crashing and off he hops, making woodland discoveries on his way. Yet every letter is not represented by a woodland creature, such as the frog, lizard and quail. The piecing together of a storyline for the bunny results in M for mealtime, N for napping and V for valley view. The XYZ pages are innovative as well. The black and white prints are skillful, but it may take repeated readings for today's young children to see the vividness without the use of color. The text rhymes and works with a few Tra la las for the ABC Song included at the front and end of the book. The jacket flap reveals that this song was composed by a member of the author's family. Unfortunately the same jacket flap implies that the letter G is for Greens eaten by the bunny. Bunny does munch greens but G is for Gale! It is a small point and does not take away from the publisher's smart decision to reissue this classic in children's literature. 2004 (orig. 1933), University of Minnesota Press, Ages 4 to 7.
