Children's Literature
In this reissued classic from the 1930s, Wanda Gssg's interpretations of such familiar Grimm tales as "Hansel and Gretel," "The Frog Prince," "The Musicians of Bremen," and "Rapunzel" sound timeless and yet fresh to the ear. Ms. Gssg's Cinderella remains true to the spirit of the Grimm talesCinderella's stepsisters cut off parts of their feet to try to make the slipper fit, and there is no pumpkin-coach or fairy godmother but a magic hazel tree instead. Yet in her retelling, Ms. Gssg makes the tales her own. Among the sixteen stories in the collection, she also includes lesser known examples, such as "Cat and Mouse Keep House" and "Six Servants." Her masterful pen-and-ink illustrations convey their own fairytale feel as well as ample doses of humor, successfully balancing the grim with the light-hearted. Winning a Newbery Honor book for Millions of Cats, Ms. Gssg also posthumously received the 1977 Kerlan Award for her body of work. Credit goes to the University of Minnesota and "Fesler-Lampert Minnesota Heritage Book Series" for making this classic collection available again.
