Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Leslie C. Grammer, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This book is a well-organized compendium of chapters that are current reviews of the roles of adhesion molecules in allergic inflammation and disease. The articles are grouped sequentially into the following categories: general adhesion molecule biology, in vitro studies of basophils and mast cells, in vitro studies of eosinophils, and in vivo studies.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to update the reader on the cells, proteins, and mechanisms involved in allergic inflammation with a major emphasis on mechanisms of local cell recruitment. The objective of this book, to review the role of adhesion molecules in allergic inflammation, is a worthy one, and this book meets it well.
Audience: The target audience for this book is basic and clinical investigators interested in mechanisms of allergic inflammation. The chapter authors are well-recognized international experts in their respective fields of investigation.
Features: There are an adequate number of tables, figures, and graphs to appropriately illustrate and catalog key concepts. The references are pertinent and up-to-date. The index and table of contents are sufficient guides to the chapter contents.
Assessment: Although there are other reviews of adhesion molecules, this one is unique because of its exclusive focus on allergic inflammation. It is an excellent presentation of current knowledge relative to characterization of adhesion molecules and counter-ligands, regulation of expression, and function, including the role of adhesion molecules in signal transduction. It is an excellent reference for medical libraries and for individuals interested in mechanisms of allergic inflammation.

Booknews

Aims to update the reader on the cells, proteins, and mechanisms involved in allergic inflammation, with a major emphasis on mechanisms of local cell recruitment. The first chapters present overviews of adhesion molecule biology. Subsequent chapters cover adhesion-related biology of cell types felt to be particularly important in allergic inflammatory reactions, including mast cells, basophils, and eosinophils. Remaining chapters address adhesion molecule expression and function "in vivo" in various allergic and other immune responses, and data on adhesion molecule antagonism are presented.
