School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-- A clearly written, well-researched presentation that retains the strengths of the first edition (Enslow, 1986), and lives up to its claim of being greatly revised and expanded. New chapters contain up-to-date facts about how to avoid exposure to the virus; today's outlook for HIV-positive individuals; and how to cope with this devastating diagnosis. Although much of the text is suitable for general readers, some sections are quite technical and will be better understood by students with some biology background. Black-and-white illustrations carried over from the earlier book are again disappointing and not in harmony with the high quality of the writing. Still, there are many uses for this edition. Lynda Madaras Talks to Teens about AIDS (Newmarket, 1988) or Nourse's Sexually Transmitted Diseases (Watts, 1992) may also be needed for reports specifically aimed at AIDS education or prevention. --Sue A. Norkeliunas, Arlington Senior High School , LaGrangeville, NY
