From The Critics

Reviewer: Brett L. Arron, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This first edition book is the authoritative, compelling, and comprehensive review of airway management. The basic science aspects, philosophy, and clinical practice are addressed in appropriate detail.
Purpose: The goal is to provide a thorough multidisciplinary understanding of airway management. Essential anatomy, radiology, pharmacology, physics, and physiology are presented first. In subsequent chapters, the clinical aspects of airway management and the appropriate use of new technologies across the broad spectrum of patients is discussed. This body of knowledge has been yearning for the unification, organization, and cogent presentation that Dr. Benumof, et al., has so ably provided.
Audience: The book is written for and belongs in the libraries of all physicians who have the responsibility to manage patients' routine and complicated airways. It is of particular interest and utility to anesthesiologists, intensivists, emergency medicine specialists, otolaryngologists, general and trauma surgeons, and nurse anesthetists. The senior contributing authors are recognized authorities in their fields. Dr. Benumof is a leading, if not preeminent, recognized authority in management of patients with difficult airways.
Features: The text is well illustrated with demonstrative pictures, radiographs, drawings, charts, and tables. Special techniques are well segregated and precisely detailed, allowing rapid assimilation of the material.
Assessment: This is clearly one of the truly outstanding contributions to the medical literature in the last decade. The breadth and depth covered in the text unifies and provides clarity to our knowledge regarding the broad spectrum of patients with airway related problems. New methods to fully utilize recent technologic developments in airway management are systematically covered. This book should be a welcome and required addition to the libraries of every anesthesia department, intensive care unit, acute emergency care unit, trauma center, burn center, obstetric unit, and outpatient surgery center, and the physicians who practice in those settings. This is a needed and welcomed definitive treatise on modern airway management.
