Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Christopher J. Young, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)Description: This is the second edition of the now-standard text thoracic anesthesia and surgery . This edition is more than 50% larger than the previous with extensive and updated references and includes several topics including lung transplants and newer ventilation modes.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an accurate summary and reference list for the basic clinical science of thoracic anesthesia and surgery for the anesthesiology team throughout the perioperative period. The extensive citation lists and well-documented discussions make the book a valuable reference tool for this field.
Audience: The target audience ranges from the anesthesia resident-in-training to practicing anesthesiologists and specialists in the area of thoracic anesthesia. Because of the clear writing style, comprehensive discussion, and continuity between sections, the text can be a valuable source for the entire range of its audience.
Features: The black-and-white figures and illustrations are numerous and complete, although some may be overly detailed. The reference lists are copious and have been updated through 1993 and, therefore, are an excellent source for all but the most recent studies. The index is complete and the table of contents is logically designed.
Assessment: This second edition of Benumof's standard text on thoracic anesthesia and surgery is more than 50% larger than its predecessor and has had the citation lists extensively expanded and updated. In addition, newer areas (such as lung transplantation, new modes of ventilation, esophageal surgery, etc.) have been included, which has significantly improved its value as both a teaching tool and a reference text.
