Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: Richard I. Cook, MD(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)Description: This third edition reflects a welcome, major revision of this standard text on thoracic anesthesia. The book includes detailed and current information regarding virtually all aspects of noncardiac thoracic anesthesia.
Purpose: The book is intended to improve the perioperative management of patients undergoing noncardiac thoracic surgery and diagnostic procedures. The highly technical nature of this work and the rapid development of surgical and medical therapy make the appearance of a new version of this standard a welcome addition to the anesthesia literature.
Audience: Intended for anesthesia practitioners at every level of training, the book will be useful for those specializing in thoracic anesthesia but also may serve as a useful reference for the nonspecialist. The editors and the chapter authors are recognized authorities in the field.
Features: Although the new edition continues to address the four basic themes (preoperative assessment, physiology and pharmacology, specific thoracic procedures and conditions, and postoperative management) the book has been streamlined and extensively updated. In effect, this is a new book. The 26 chapters of the second edition have been reduced to 20 with new additions including a particularly useful review of pulmonary resection. Two-thirds of the chapter authors are new contributors, replacing the majority of those from the prior edition. Sections on preoperative evaluation and preparation, radiology, and transplant (among others) demonstrate the significant changes in the field. Fully two-thirds of the references in the preoperative assessment chapter are new, as are three-quarters of the references on transplantation. The book now includes color images and the photographic reproductions are better quality. The format has been changed to 11 x 8.75 inches, allowing more photos on a single page, and the type and heading formats have been upgraded, producing a pleasing appearance. Together, these changes contribute to making the book a significant improvement over prior editions. Typographic flaws are rather more common than one would like to see in such an expensive and otherwise beautiful book.
Assessment: The book is thoughtfully organized so as to be valuable for both quick reference and deliberate reading. Chapter length is such that one can read one at a sitting. The revision reflects a modern style of presentation that most readers will find attractive. Owners of a prior edition will find that the new book has the same general organization. They will be especially pleased with the extensive revision of the content and the significant improvement in image quality and appearance.
